Welcome to a new feature: BACKSTAGE at UDON! Here we’ll show you a little bit of what goes into the creation of our various projects, and the hard work we’re putting in to make them the best in the industry!
First up, take a look at one of our gorgeous July releases, Shining Force Feather: Design Works. Based on the game for the Nintendo DS, SFF is a sprawling and epic fantasy RPG entry in the Shining Force series of video games. This artbook follows our beautiful 2011 release, Tony’s Artworks from Shining World, our first “Shining” artbook release, featuring the work of Tony Taka.
Shining Force Feather: Design Works is chock full of official game art, design sketches, character profiles, and much more. It’s such an intense book to produce that we actually used three different paper stocks in this book, one for each section, as well as a special ink and beautiful gold-foil-stamped cover…! As you can see above, the cover proof shows the art before foil-stamping, and on the bottom left you can see the “black” ink layer, the “copper” ink layer next to it, and then on the bottom right, what both look like when combined! We tested out numerous prints and paperstocks in order to get this project just right, and while we do this for all of our books, you can see this one was just a bit more complex than usual…!
Holding one of the rare pre-release copies in my hands, I can tell you that all of the production team’s hard work was worth it! While Shining Force Feather: Design Works might be one of our titles for the most dedicated and hardcore fans, all artbook collectors should keep an eye out for this one… it’s too beautiful not to have a print copy in your collection!
